Please allow me to introduce myself: my name is Philippe ETIENNE, and I have been a full-time, self-employed translator for more than 20 years.
Genuinely interested in science and technology, I have progressed through a rather “classic” university curriculum, concluded by a 5th year advanced degree in scientific instrumentation from the University of Strasbourg, France.
Following work experiences in custom equipment for the event industry in the United Kingdom and industrial instrumentation and control in Morocco, I found out about the translation world in 1999 through British friends. There I saw an opportunity to make good use of my academic knowledge, my writing skills and my liking for languages: English, which I had been practising for two years in London in full immersion at work and off work on top of school and university education; and French, my mother tongue, whose challenges I have always mastered.
I eventually took the plunge and officially registered as a self-employed translator in May 2000 in Casablanca, Morocco.
Since then, I have honed my skills and experience in this profession through a variety of content, from highly technical manuals to appealing marketing copy. I thrive to render crystal-clear and flowing texts, which accurately convey the original meaning without letting its English source transpire in the French rendering. Bottom line: you get translations that not only spread your message with accuracy, but also read like they were specifically written for the French-speaking market. This means thoroughness and sober style in technical instructions, reports or engineering presentations, and punchy and appealing copy in sales brochures, websites or multichannel customer-facing communication.
I am currently based in Spain, in the Andalusian province of Seville.
